About the Fremont Corn Expo
The Fremont Corn Expo is organized and hosted by Nebraska Extension. The Fremont Chamber Ag Business and Natural Council, Dodge County Farm Bureau, Colfax-Dodge Corn Growers Association, and Nebraska Corn Board are the primary partners supporting Nebraska Extension in making the Fremont Corn Expo a great local event for corn growers. The Fremont Corn Expo is held the beginning of January each year. The Fremont Corn Expo attracts 300 to 400 attendees in a 1-hour driving distance from Fremont (see county map below) along with 50 agribusiness exhibitors. The expo is financially supported by local partners and agribusiness exhibitors. The Fremont Corn Expo was started in 2004 by former Extension Educator, Dave Varner.
The Fremont Corn Expo features speakers and panelists that provide local corn growers with the knowledge they need to effectively manage locally-relevant issues each year. Specific areas of focus include:
- Applying New Ag Technology
- Improving Economic Viability
- Increasing Resiliency to Extreme Weather
- Enhancing Soil and Water Resources
The Fremont Corn Expo is a free event open to the public. We hope that you can join us this year and enjoy our great expo!

Tyler Williams
Biography
Tyler is a Nebraska Extension Educator focusing on cropping systems and climate resiliency in Lancaster, Cass, and Otoe Counties. Tyler has led Extension activities in Nebraska, the U.S., and internationally to educate producers and community members on climate science, as well as adaptation and management strategies to deal with climate variation and extreme weather. Tyler earned his B.S. in Meteorology/Climatology with a minor in Mathematics and a M.A.S. in Agronomy both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Tyler grew up on a ranch in south central Nebraska and still enjoys working with livestock and spending time with his wife and three children.

Hail storms cause catastrophic damage across North America, and in particular, Nebraska. A team of Nebraska Extension faculty created resources to address the vast and timely decisions necessary when responding to these events. This presentation will showcase these resources.

Elaine Kub
Biography
Elaine Kub is the author of “Mastering the Grain Markets: How Profits Are Really Made”, a 360-degree look at all aspects of grain trading, which draws on her experiences as a commodity market analyst, futures broker, grain merchandiser, and farmer. Before earning an engineering degree from the University of Nebraska and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of California San Diego, Kub grew up on a family farm in South Dakota, where she is still active in grain and livestock production. Kub’s analysis can be found on DTN The Progressive Farmer and on various radio and television programs, including Market Journal, Market to Market, and U.S. Farm Report.

Amelia Breinig
Biography
Amelia Breinig became Assistant Director for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture in October of 2018. Born and raised in Arapahoe, Nebraska, she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she received a Bachelor of Journalism with a major in broadcasting. Following graduation from UNL, Breinig accepted a position in Washington, D.C. working for Senator Deb Fischer. She spent time in both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate as a part of the Senate Finance Committee’s majority staff. Prior to returning home to Nebraska, she worked at the office of the United States Trade Representative as the Director for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement working on a variety of trade issues including agriculture, small business and technology. Breinig also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota. She resides in Lincoln while her parents still own and operate her family’s farm outside of Arapahoe.

Dr. Justin McMechan
Biography
Anthony “Justin” McMechan is a Crop Protection and Cropping Systems Specialist located at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center near Ithaca, NE. In 2016, Justin graduated with a Ph.D. in Entomology and Doctor of Plant Health degree from the University of Nebraska. Both of these degrees were centered around multidisciplinary research and he has made this a fundamental part of his program at UNL. His lab currently focuses on pest and beneficial insects in cover crop systems, evaluating hail damage in row crops, and understanding emerging problems such as ear development issues in corn and soybean gall midge. Dr. McMechan utilizes a wide range of technologies in his extension program such as infographics, time-lapse photography and Go-Pro cameras to develop standalone products to reach his clientele and avoid the technical jargon that comes with research.

Cover Crops and Insects: Finding a Balance Between Risk and Benefit
Presentation Description
Cover crop adoption is largely driven by a number of agronomic factors that vary depending on the producer’s goals. Insects are rarely discussed in cover crop systems unless significant economic losses occur. This presentation will focus on cover crop management practices that alter beneficial insect activity or risk of insect pests in cover crop to corn transition systems.

Dr. Joe Luck
Biography
Dr. Joe Luck is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist for Precision Agriculture. His responsibilities include developing extension and research programs regarding the application of precision agriculture technologies in crop production as well as teaching in this area. His current research and extension efforts are focused on demonstrating agricultural data management strategies and technology applications for improving crop production efficiency. He works closely with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate technologies including crop canopy sensors for nitrogen application, advanced pesticide application systems, multi-hybrid planters, and grain harvest systems. Since 2015, he has served as a Board Member of the Agricultural Data Cooperative, a group focused on improving agricultural data, privacy, access, and utilization for producers.

Project SENSE: A Three Year Review of Sensor-Based Nitrogen Management in Irrigated Corn Production
Presentation Description
Project SENSE represents a three-year effort comparing our cooperating producers’ nitrogen (N) management practices versus a strategy using crop canopy sensor-based in-season N management. Forty-eight field sites were conducted representing over 1,200 acres over three years. Over 80% of field sites saw higher N-use efficiencies using the sensor-based approach. In addition, just over 60% of field sites showed a higher marginal net return by using the sensor-based system. As expected, potential return-on-investment was dependent on corn and N prices, average increased profitability ranged from $7.24/ac to $13.23/ac from lower prices to higher prices, respectively.
