About the Fremont Corn Expo
The Fremont Corn Expo is organized and hosted by Nebraska Extension. The Fremont Chamber Ag Business and Natural Council, Nebraska Farm Bureau in Dodge County, Colfax-Dodge Corn Growers Association, and Nebraska Corn Board are the primary partners supporting Nebraska Extension in making the Fremont Corn Expo a great local event for corn growers. The Fremont Corn Expo is held the beginning of January each year. The Fremont Corn Expo attracts 300 to 400 attendees in a 1-hour driving distance from Fremont along with 50 agribusiness exhibitors. The expo is financially supported by local partners and agribusiness exhibitors. The Fremont Corn Expo was started in 2004 by former Extension Educator, Dave Varner.
The Fremont Corn Expo features speakers and panelists that provide local corn growers with the knowledge they need to effectively manage locally-relevant issues each year. Specific areas of focus include:
- Applying New Ag Technology
- Improving Economic Viability
- Increasing Resiliency to Extreme Weather
- Enhancing Soil and Water Resources
The Fremont Corn Expo is a free event open to the public. We hope that you can join us this year and enjoy our great expo!

Dr. Tamra Jackson-Ziems
Biography
Extension Specialist and Associate Professor, joined the faculty of the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in April 2005 after completing her graduate degrees at the University of Arkansas and University of Illinois-Urbana. Her appointment is split between extension, research, and teaching 80/10/10%, respectively, with statewide responsibility for diseases of corn and grain sorghum. Her extension activities encompass educating clientele about disease identification, prevention, and management. And her research projects encompass a broad range of topics, including plant parasitic nematodes of corn, Goss’s bacterial wilt and blight, and use of fungicides for foliar disease control. During her time at UNL, she has delivered more than 100 invited presentations in 16 states and is the 2009 recipient of both the UNL Institute of Agriculture’s Dinsdale Family Faculty Teaching Award and the UNL Extension Distinguished New Employee Award.

Darin Newsom
Biography
DTN Senior Analyst, Darin Newsom has 30 years of experience analyzing commodity markets and developing risk-management strategies, and is also the creator and guiding force behind DTN’s Six Factor Marketing Strategies.
Besides DTN, his articles and commentary are consistently featured in industry publications such as The Progressive Farmer, Trader Planet, and Commodities Now Magazine, along with multiple newspapers and radio stations throughout the country. He’s a well-known speaker on the agricultural circuit, providing his analysis and commentary on a variety of markets. He also appears as a regular analyst on the Iowa Public Television Program “Market to Market”.

Dr. Ken Hellevang
Biography
Ken has a Ph. D. degree in engineering, is a registered professional engineer, and has obtained the academic rank of tenured Professor at North Dakota State University. As an Extension (outreach) Engineer of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering at North Dakota State University, he has provided education and technical assistance in grain drying and storage, structures with a focus on energy efficiency, indoor environmental engineering primarily related to moisture and mold, and flood preparation and recovery to farmers, citizens, agribusiness, and professionals across the United States and internationally since 1980.
His educational program utilizes numerous methods including publications, presentations, media, individual consultations, and the internet to provide education and technical assistance to clientele. He has authored or co-authored more than 220 publications and numerous resources that are on the internet. These include technical papers, proceedings, professional standards, chapters in handbooks, videos, and peer reviewed Extension circulars and bulletins distributed by private business, professional societies, and universities internationally. Ken has presented more than 1,000 seminars and has provided engineering assistance to more than 15,000 people across the United States and internationally.
He has conducted research on numerous grain drying and storage topics including moisture content changes in stored grain during summer, drying and storage of dry edible beans, air temperature increase due to grain drying and aeration fans, and aeration duct design. He has conducted numerous grain dryer energy audits.
He is active in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE -The Society for engineering in agricultural, food, and biological systems) having served in numerous leadership roles and in other professional organizations. He has been recognized with the grade of Fellow by ASABE, the highest honor bestowed on 0.2 percent of members annually.
He and his wife Merna have three adult children and lives in Fargo, ND.

Presentation Description
The presentation will provide current grain storage practices and available technology for managing the stored grain. Each year requires different strategies, so the presentation provides fundamental storage expertise that can be applied based on current conditions. There will be time for questions enabling farmers to obtain answers to their specific questions on storage and drying.

Al Dutcher
Biography
His formal training was a B.S. in Meteorology in 1985 from Iowa State University and an MS from ISU in 1989 is agricultural climatology. He was the State Climatologist from 1991-2015 before resigning his position when the Nebraska State Climate Office reorganized in 2016. Most of his job description remains unchanged with a new title of Ag Extension Climatologist and has allowed him to expand his focus areas to include drought monitoring, climate resiliency, short and long term climate trend analysis, along with the development of climatic products that assist producers by reducing risk to specific weather conditions.

How Long Will the Impacts of La Nina Last and What Role Will It Play in the 2018 Crop Production?
Presentation Description
La Nina conditions began to developed during the second half of this past summer and the consensus forecast from a suite of global models call for it to last through the late winter before dissipating. This talk will concentrate on how the Equatorial Pacific, Arctic Oscillation, and Julian Madden Oscillations interact to create our winter weather across North America. I will also examine the role of this current La Nina event on spring planting nationwide, with a special emphasis on soil moisture reserves, drought risk, severe weather, and growing season weather. An attempt will also be made to examine which areas of the country have the greatest odds of success or failure based upon expected growing season weather patterns if La Nina conditions continue or dissipate before summer conditions arrive in 2018.
