Hail Know: A Resource from Nebraska Extension

With the hail storms last night in Saline, Jefferson, and Gage counties, I wanted to remind or introduce you all to resources for crop producers developed by Nebraska Extension. I was part of a team after the 2014 hail storms to create a set of hail-related resources for farmers. A website, videos, and infographics were created for you. Please access all of these resources at https://cropwatch.unl.edu/hailknow.

The resources are split into 6 sections including the hail storm, assess my damage, handle my insurance, replant my crop, managing my recovering crop, and are cover crops for me.

For example… Assess my Damage (one of six sections)

In terms of site visits, it is too early for me to assess regrowth potential of some hail-damaged plants. We need to wait 4 to 6 days or more. The steps you can take now include assessing all of your fields (drive, walk, and make a list), understanding the insurance policy you have, and then reporting damage with your crop insurance agent. Please see the flow diagram in the infographic below or at https://cropwatch.unl.edu/Hail/Images/HailKnow-Damage-Assessment.png

Please read, watch, and use all the resources at Hail Know. For more agronomic information from Nebraska Extension, contact me at or 402-821-1722. Know your crop, know your tech, know your bottom line at croptechcafe.org.
