Written by Nathan Mueller

If you are a landowner, farmer, cattle producer, or agricultural professional in Gage, Jefferson, and Saline counties, I encourage you to register and attend some of our upcoming Nebraska Extension programs in December and early January.

December 13 – The first program is a workshop called “So You’ve Inherited a Farm … Now What?” on Wednesday, December 13 from 10:30 am – 2:00 pm at Nebraska Extension in Gage County (1115 W. Scott, Beatrice Ne 68310). The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability will present this workshop for those planning and involved in farmland succession who want to learn more about the best strategies for managing and owning this asset and how it may impact the transition plan. The workshop will include evaluating current trends in land values and cash rents, strategies for successful land transitions, lease provisions, legal considerations and managing communication and expectations among family members. Creating and adjusting estate plans will also be covered. The program is free to attend and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is requested one day prior to the workshop by calling Gage County Extension office at 402-223-1384.

January 9 – The second program is called “Cow Clinics” and will be held on Tuesday, January 9, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Beatrice 77 Livestock at 3320 N 6th St, Beatrice NE 68310. The clinic information will help prepare your herd for a successful calving & breeding season. The clinic will cover body condition scoring, teat and udder scoring, forage sampling, understand forage analysis, and develop diets for the last trimester. The first 20 producers to register will be given instructions on how to obtain a free forage test. Cost to attend is $20. Please contact Wayde Pickinpaugh, Livestock Systems Extension Educator, at 402-335-3669 or to register.

January 11 – The third program is our regional 2024 Crop Production Clinic organized by the UNL Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, UNL Pesticide Safety Education Program, and local Nebraska Extension Water & Cropping System Educators. Our regional clinic will be held from 8:45 am to 3:30 pm on Thursday, Jan. 11 in Beatrice at the Holiday Inn Express, 4005 N 6th St. The crop production clinic offers practical, profitable, environmentally sound, high impact training for agricultural professionals and farmers. Commercial pesticide and private pesticide applicators can attend Room 1 to get their 3-year required training. A second room will run concurrently on topics geared for farmers and certified crop advisers. The cost of the crop production clinic for attendees will be $95 (includes lunch and handouts).
