2017 Dodge County Crop Tech Cafe Yield Tour: September 5-7
with Nathan Mueller
As a reminder, here is my methodology…
Crop Tech Cafe Corn Yield Estimation Method:
- Stop at random fields along a predetermined driving route through Dodge County (map above).
- Walk past all end rows and then walk at least another 60 feet or more into the field.
- Measure out an area 1/1,000 of an acre based on the row width. For 30-inch rows, this equates to a 17′ 5″ row length.
- Pull back husks on every 5th ear for dryland fields and on every 6th ear for irrigated fields in row 1.
- Repeat step 4 for the adjacent row or row 2 to average across row-units of the planter.
- Count the total number of corn ears in both row 1 and row 2.
- Count the number of kernel rows and kernels within a row or length. Only continuous rows counted, so some kernels at the base and tip of an ear are not counted.
- Calculate kernels per ear from average of 5 ears, then kernels per ear * total ears / kernel weight (75K) = bushels/acre for row 1 and repeat for row 2.
- Example: 560 kernels per ear * 33 / 75 = 246 bu/ac
- Average the yield estimates from row 1 and row 2 to get a final estimate. (Note: Yield estimates are from a small area within the field, not the entire field)
Crop Tech Cafe Soybean Yield Estimation Method:
Step-by-step printable guide and calculator: Estimating Soybean Yield
- Stop at random fields along a predetermined driving route through Dodge County (map above).
- Walk past all end rows and then walk at least another 60 feet or more into the field.
- Measure out an area 1/10,000 of an acre based on the row width. For 30-inch rows, this equates to a 21″ row length and for 15-inch rows this equates to two 21″ row lengths for adjacent rows.
- Use a pruning shears to cut all soybean plants at the base in this 1/10,000 of an acre and carry them back to the pickup bed.
- Count the total number or sum of pods on all plants.
- Count the number of seeds per pod in all pods on two representative plants in the sample.
- Multiply total pods per 1/10,000 of an acre by the average number of seeds per pod and divide by 18 (factor for 3,000 seeds/lbs) to get the yield estimate at 13% moisture.
- Yield estimates below include preharvest/harvest loss (15%) and moisture loss (harvested at 9% moisture) factor. (Note: Yield estimates are from a small area within the field, not the entire field).
2017 Crop Yield Tour Summary
Dates of Previous Yield Tours:
- 2017 Yield Tour – Sept. 5-7
- 2016 Yield Tour – Sept. 7-10
- 2015 Yield Tour – Sept. 1-4
The 2017 corn preharvest yield estimate was 197 bu/ac, which is up 13 bu/ac from a year ago and similar to 2015 (Table 1 below). Irrigated and rainfed yields averaged 224 bu/ac and 173 bu/ac, respectively. Irrigated yields were 12 bu/ac and 15 bu/ac higher than 2016 and 2015, respectively. However, rainfed yields are up 6 bu/ac from 2016, but 15 bu/ac less than 2015. Ear counts across the county averaged 28,200/acres, which is up from 2016 (July 5 Wind Storm impacted 75,000 acres with green snap) and similar to 2015. Corn maturity is behind from last year but ahead of 2015 (tours roughly the same time each year, so not a perfect comparison).

The 2017 soybean preharvest yield is estimated at 56 bu/ac for the county (averaged across rainfed and irrigated), down 7 bu/ac from a year ago and down 2 bu/ac from 2015 (Table 2 below). The county average for pods per 1/10,000 of acre was down nearly 100 pod from 2016 but similar to the pod count in 2015. Seeds per pod was 2.5 that is similar to the 2.4 in 2016 and 2.6 in 2015. Maturity was only slightly behind from last year, but ahead of 2015 similar to corn.
