KTIC Radio Extension Corner Jan. 1 2015: Fremont Corn Expo on Jan. 8

This is Nathan Mueller, Cropping Systems Extension Educator in Fremont, NE. The Fremont Corn Expo will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8th, one week from today starting at 8:00 am. The Fremont Corn Expo is designed for growers, crop consultants, agronomists, and others looking to improve corn production, marketing, and utilization. The Fremont Corn Expo is located in the Christensen Field Event Center on the west side of Fremont south of the airport.

Registration for the free event begins at 8 a.m. with a complimentary waffle breakfast sponsored by the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce and a chance to view over 50 exhibits from area agribusinesses. The program gets under way at 8:50 with a welcome from Major of Fremont and the program lasts until 2.45 in the afternoon. A complimentary lunch will be served to expo participants courtesy of Dodge and Colfax County Farm Bureau.

Keynote speaker Ruth MacDonald, Professor and Chair of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University, will present “Fact and Fiction about GMO in Food. Other program topics include “Revenue Risk, Forward Contracting, and Crop Insurance” presented by Cory Walters, UNL Agricultural Economists; “Economic Impact of Expanding Livestock Production” presented by Eric Thompson UNL Economists; “Utilizing the Precision Ag Tools You Already Have” presented by Joe Luck, UNL Precision Ag Engineer; and a panel discussion composed of several area farm managers and ag lenders on “Farming in 2015 with lower commodity prices.”

The expo also will include industry updates from the Nebraska Corn Board, Nebraska Corn Grower’s Associations, Fremont Chamber of Commerce, and Nebraska Farm Bureau.

A nitrogen applicator certification training will be conducted for Lower Platte North NRD producers at 2:45 and after the Corn Expo, USDA-FSA Dodge County Director, Bryan Ralston, will address decisions producers and landowners need to make in regards to the new farm bill.
